Advancing Forest Carbon Monitoring: Our METI-Funded Project in Malawi Takes Root

We're thrilled to announce a major milestone in our mission to revolutionize forest carbon monitoring. Thanks to funding from METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), our groundbreaking demonstration project in Malawi has officially begun data collection in partnership with iRise Carbon.

Why This Matters

The challenge of accurately measuring forest biomass and carbon sequestration has long hindered effective climate action. Traditional manual calculation methods are not only costly and time-intensive but also prone to significant inaccuracies. Our AI-powered satellite data analysis offers a transformative solution—delivering substantially higher accuracy at a fraction of the cost.

However, the key to any successful AI system lies in the quality of its training data. That's why we're working with iRise Carbon, who is on the ground in Malawi, collecting the precise, localized data needed to fine-tune our models for African forest ecosystems.

The Project in Action

Over the next two months, our partnership with iRise Carbon will encompass comprehensive data collection across 15,000 hectares of Malawian forest. Local teams are conducting detailed measurements across 150 strategically selected plots, meticulously recording:

  • Tree counts and species identification
  • Height and diameter measurements for each tree
  • Biomass and carbon storage calculations

This field data serves two critical purposes: validating our satellite-based predictions against real-world measurements and enabling us to customize our global AI model to local forest conditions. The result? Biomass estimations that are both more accurate and more relevant to the specific ecosystems we're monitoring.

Supporting Local Communities

Beyond the technical achievements, this project represents our commitment to meaningful collaborations that create local value. By working directly with iRise Carbon, who is contracting local workers for data collection, we're not just gathering data—we're supporting sustainable employment and building lasting relationships in the communities where we operate.

Initial results from the first data batch are already showing promise, reinforcing our confidence in this approach. As we continue to refine our models with this invaluable on-ground data, we're positioned to deliver unprecedented accuracy in satellite-based forest monitoring.
